Survival classes thriving despite hard times

It’s a school with no computers, no televisions, no cell phones, no light switches, no amenities. If you want food or water, you’re pretty much on your own. The classroom is the great outdoors – and the course is survival.

In today’s tough economic times, when people are contemplating living with less, survival classes are attracting plenty of students who believe the primitive world offers an embarrassment of natural riches that not only can make the difference between life and death but also can expand personal growth.

“Five years ago, I founded Adventure Out. It was just me with a few friends helping to give surf lessons and survival workshops,” says Cliff Hodges of Santa Cruz. “The company grew to 20 employees, and now we run programs all over the state. Now every class fills up with a pretty long waiting list.”

Wilderness survival schools have been around since the 1960s, but interest began swelling during the Y2K scare. These days, people have access to plenty of survival material. They’re watching survival television shows. They’re reading survival books, such as “Survive! Essential Skills and Tactics to Get You Out of Anywhere – Alive” by Les Stroud, host of the Discovery Channel show “Survivorman.” They’re checking out survival schools online and through word of mouth.

What neophytes are quickly discovering is that survival schools are not just for Rambo anymore; they’re for Bambi, too.

Emergency Storage Food Among Products in Highest Demand

May 9, 2009

At the end of 2008, there are three consumer marketplaces that are experiencing record sales volumes—firearms, precious metals, and emergency storage food. Crisis preparedness is increasingly the theme for those seeking a refuge for their money and comfort from their concerns.

Minneapolis (Vocus/PRWEB ) December 6, 2008 – Gun dealers all over the United States are having a hard time keeping any inventory on hand for anxious customers. Reports are that guns and ammunition are selling at levels up to 50% higher than previous records.

Anxiety and bearish outlooks abound wherever one cares to look today. There’s precious little a concerned citizen can do in reaction to global forces spinning out of control. But we all do what we can. At Safecastle, we’re particularly happy to give our customers this holiday-season opportunity to become better positioned for what looks like rough times ahead.

The demand for gold has similarly erupted—Q3 of 2008 showed global sales 45% higher than the quarter before, which itself set the previous high-water mark.

Survival gear and emergency food producers are shipping product as fast as they can get it through their facilities and onto the loading docks. Using packaging technologies that deliver shelf lives measured in years and even decades, producers of storage food are experiencing unprecedented demand today for their products.

Victor Rantala, owner of the crisis preparedness company Safecastle LLC, said: “Our business volume this year will triple over last year, and most of this increased activity has come in the last 3-4 months.

“By far, our best seller right now is Mountain House freeze-dried food. It stores for more than 25 years, it’s easy to prepare, and it tastes great. Outdoorsmen and adventurers consider it a preferred staple. Our customers, those who are looking at a future that looks very uncertain, see it as a way to lock in today’s prices and to ensure a level of peace of mind that is hard to otherwise put a value on.”

In response to the overwhelming demand for storage food and strains on customers’ budgets, Safecastle is offering an end-of-the-year sale on Mountain House freeze dried food in cans—which offer the longest shelf life of any storage food on the market. All Mountain House cans are 25% off list and ship for free to the continental U.S.A. The sale is running at the Safecastle Royal Buyers Club from December 6 to December 19.

Said Rantala, “Anxiety and bearish outlooks abound wherever one cares to look today. There’s precious little a concerned citizen can do in reaction to global forces spinning out of control. But we all do what we can. At Safecastle, we’re particularly happy to give our customers this holiday-season opportunity to become better positioned for what looks like rough times ahead.”

Swine Flu: News, Protection, Treatments.

April 27, 2009

The new viral strain of swine flu is called H1N1. The 1918 pandemic flu was also H1N1. Pigs have been implicated in the emergence of new influenza viruses responsible for two of the previous century’s influenza pandemics, including the 1918 pandemic strain which spread to nearly every part of the world killing an estimated 2.5 to 5% of the human population – somewhere in the region of 50 million to 100 million people.

The global community is hoping this does not turn into a pandemic. What can you do to allay your fears?

Become informed about what it is, and what measures you can take to lessen your risk of exposure, and learn how to treat it in case you get it.

On the origins of this virus, it seems likely that birds infected the swine with bird flu. This mutated the swine flu virus which spread among pigs. This was then picked up by humans in contact with the pigs and mutated into a human-carrying component.

“It is a hybrid that resulted from a combination of four different viruses — one that typically infects people, one that originated in North American birds and two from pigs in Europe and Asia,” Anne Schuchat, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, told the Washington Post.

An alternative version is offered here

The cases of swine flu that are officially admitted

are listed on this google map.

Almost all of the deaths so far have been in Mexico City, Mexico

and San Luis Potosi, Mexico.

Alternative news reports from on-site people in Mexico are illuminating the severity of the virus, as being much worse than the official reports.

I work as a resident doctor in one of the biggest hospitals in Mexico City and sadly, the situation is far from “under control”. As a doctor, I realise that the media does not report the truth. Authorities distributed vaccines among all the medical personnel with no results, because two of my partners who worked in this hospital (interns) were killed by this new virus in less than six days even though they were vaccinated as all of us were. The official number of deaths is 20, nevertheless, the true number of victims are more than 200. I understand that we must avoid to panic, but telling the truth it might be better now to prevent and avoid more deaths.
Yeny Gregorio Dávila, Mexico City

I’m a specialist doctor in respiratory diseases and intensive care at the Mexican National Institute of Health. There is a severe emergency over the swine flu here. More and more patients are being admitted to the intensive care unit. Despite the heroic efforts of all staff (doctors, nurses, specialists, etc) patients continue to inevitably die. The truth is that anti-viral treatments and vaccines are not expected to have any effect, even at high doses. It is a great fear among the staff. The infection risk is very high among the doctors and health staff.
There is a sense of chaos in the other hospitals and we do not know what to do. Staff are starting to leave and many are opting to retire or apply for holidays. The truth is that mortality is even higher than what is being reported by the authorities, at least in the hospital where I work it. It is killing three to four patients daily, and it has been going on for more than three weeks. It is a shame and there is great fear here. Increasingly younger patients aged 20 to 30 years are dying before our helpless eyes and there is great sadness among health professionals here.
Antonio Chavez, Mexico City

I have a sister-in-law from San Luis Potosi state in Mexico and we were told that in San Luis Potosi there have been at least 78 deaths, just in that city alone, not 68 in all of Mexico, as is being reported. Schools have been closed until 6 May in this state and in other areas in Mexico. Also, many public venues are being closed, so this makes it more deadly and dangerous than has been stated.
Migdalia Cruz, Phoenix, Arizona, USA

1. It appears to be airborne, transmitted human to human, mostly from coughs and sneezes. Wearing a mask in public or around infected people can reduce your chance of getting the flu. Staying 6 feet away from other people can also help. Wash hands often, especially after returning from any public place. (Take a shower if you are as nervous about it as I am)

The CDC currently recommends that you cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, wash your hands often with soap and water, avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth, and try to avoid close contact with sick people.

2. The virus appears to be resistant to at least two weapons in the antiviral arsenal — amantadine and rimantadine (don’t bother taking these) – but it may still be susceptible to the popular flu drugs oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza). So if you take the anti viral Tamiflu or Relenza within 48 hours following symptom onset, it can weaken the virus and you will not have as severe an illness. (from abc news) (Some reports have stated that Tamiflu does not stop the cytokine storm that is what can be so severe)

The symptoms of swine flu in people are expected to be similar to the symptoms of regular human seasonal influenza and include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing. Some people with swine flu also have reported runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. -CDC

3. Strengthen your immune system in any and every way possible. Get enough sleep.

4. Bolster your health with anti-viral foods such as garlic, onions, turmeric, red beet juice; vitamin C rich foods such as tomatoes, raw green peppers, strawberries and citrus fruit.. Daniel Vitalis has an anti-viral nutritional elixir that might protect you. (See Video here in previous post)

5. Keep some antiviral herbs on hand in case of infection. Consider Chinese Herbs.

6. Nutritional supplements to bolster your health and immune system include: Vitamin C, Vitamin A and Bioflavanoids, Zinc, Oil of Oregano, beta glucan, and N-acetyl-cysteine.

6. Jim Humble’s miracle mineral supplement is said to cure Bird Flu, Swine Flu, AIDS, hepatitis A, B and C, malaria, herpes, TB, most cancers and many more of mankind’s worst diseases.

7. Colloidal Silver (oral, IV, and nebulized, with particle size 0-10nm and a Ag+ positive charge). Also administered as drops into eyes and nose. Brands: Sovereign Silver, Super Silver, Silver Lungs, Silver Gen, APAP etc.

8. Atomic (nascent) Iodine

9. Viruses cannot live in a body that is PH balanced. Most of us are on the acidic side, so try to get more alkaline foods in your diet. Eat your leafy green veggies. Watermelon and asparagus are two highly alkalizing foods.

10. Grapefruit seed extract (GSE), also known as citrus seed extract, is a liquid derived from the seeds, pulp, and white membranes of grapefruit. While there has been no scientific demonstration of efficacy, this extract has been claimed by some practitioners of alternative medicine to possess antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties.

11. a Neti Pot = nasal irrigation. Can’t hurt to do this, either and might help, at least symptoms.

I know that if Swine Flu is in my neighborhood I will be taking as many of these as I can get my hands on!

Good Luck and God Bless,

Berkey Water Filter

April 25, 2009

We have a Travel Berkey water filter and highly recommend it. After more than a year we still have not had to change the filter. The smaller Travel Berkey is sufficient for a two person family. If you have more people in your household, you might want to buy a larger one. The taste is excellent.  JGrace

The element used in Berkey systems takes water filtration to a new level. During tests conducted by independent EPA approved laboratories the Black Berkey purification element used in the Berkey systems reduced a long list of additional contaminates with never before seen results, and significantly  raises the standard for the water filter industry. Read the extensive list below and see for yourself the ability of these amazing water filters.

Black Berkey elements are far more powerful than any other gravity filter element available. We tested the Black Berkey filters with more than 10,000 times the concentration of harmful pathogens per liter than is required by industry standard test protocols. This concentration of pathogens is so high that the water exiting the filters should be expected to contain 100,000 or more of pathogens per liter (99.99% reduction – the requirement in order to be classified for pathogenic removal). Incredibly the purification elements removed 100% of the pathogens. Absolutely no pathogens were found in the effluent or were able to be detected, even under an electron microscope. This sets a new standard,  allowing us to classify all Berkey systems containing the Black Berkey elements as purifiers. The revolutionary Black Berkey purification elements are so powerful they can remove food coloring from the water without removing any of the beneficial minerals your body needs.

The Berkey™ Filter element had extensive testing at State & EPA accredited laboratories and far exceed EPA & ANSI/NSF (Std. 53) protocol. The Black Berkey elements have been Tested by the University of Phoenix. Spectrum Labs and the Department of Toxicology and Environmental Science Louisiana University.

Because the versatile Black Berkey® purification elements fit most other manufacturers gravity filters, off brand gravity filtration systems can be upgraded. This replacement filter vastly improves other brands housings ability to remove unwanted water contaminates.

Each element has a life of 3000 gallons. An incredible 6000 gallons for a 2 filter system (less than 2 cents per gallon of water). This is possible because of the filters unique ability to be cleaned up to 100 times using a 3M Scotch Brite Pad.
